Chornobyl. Graveyard of ships and barges
The city of Chernobyl is a small ancient town, which was destined to give the name to not only the nuclear power plant itself, but also later the entire Exclusion Zone. Before the accident at the nuclear power plant in 1986, Chernobyl was a district center - 5 km2 in area. with a population of 13,700 people. For most of its history, Chernobyl was a rural settlement. A city appearance it began to acquire in the 60s of the twentieth century. Then there appeared high-rise buildings, a cinema, a department store, a bus station, etc.
One can say that Chernobyl was created by the Pripyat River, which provided income from trade, collection of customs duties, repair and production of ships. In the city, on the bank of the Chernobyl backwater, there was a large ship repair yard - the Chernobyl repair and operational base of the river fleet.
Chernobyl Zaton (backwater) - inflow of the Pripyat River, was used as a harbor, in which, before the accident, people were engaged in repairing ships and disposing of old ships.
It is known that during the Great Patriotic War, at the ship repair plant and in the city of Chernobyl, there was a partisan movement, which was organizing resistance to the invaders.
Even under the Soviet regime, this place gathered boys from the whole district, who climbed on abandoned ships, which were brought here for repair or for scrap metal.
After the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986, the vessels and barges that participated in the aftermath of the accident, namely carrying radioactive cargo, thereby collecting radiation, were towed to the last pier, which appeared to be Chernobyl backwater, former shipyard, where they are now slowly rusting and going under the water. Now this place has become a graveyard of radioactive barges and ships.
Shipyard no more exists. The SE "Chernobyl Forest" is located on its territory. The company is engaged in the supervision and restoration of forests, and natural reserves are under its jurisdiction.
