Heroes of Chornobyl - first firefighters

Accident at Chernobyl NPP : Heroes that saved us!

The city of Pripyat, before the accident, was one of the youngest and most prosperous cities in Ukraine. At the same time, everyone was looking only forward - in the future. There were a lot of plans and projects that contributed to the development of the city, and no one thought about any possible consequences. But everything collapsed at night on April 26, 1986, and the first to be affected by this trouble were firefighters.

First, the fire brigade of MFU-2 (the militarized fire unit number 2 on the protection of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant) under the command of Lieutenant Vladimir Pravik left for the fire fighting. The second was the Pripyat fire brigade of MFB-6 (Militarized fire brigade number 6), commanded by Lieutenant Viktor Kibenok. The third was the fire brigade of the city of Chernobyl.

On the night of April 26, firefighters rushed as usually, to an ordinary fire, without even thinking about the means of protection. The fact that the reactor exploded then no one knew. On the way to the epicenter of the explosion, Vladimir Pravik saw a fiery glow that came from under the reactor block and the roof of the turbine hall. He immediately understood the seriousness of the situation and reported on the radio a fire alarm signal of the third level. This is considered the highest level of fire danger, at which the fire extinguishing groups of all district divisions are raised. Therefore, to the epicenter of the explosion, soon began to arrive fire trucks from neighboring areas - Ivankov, Polesskoe, Boyarka, Irpen, Kiev.

After a couple of hours, the first signs of acute radiation sickness began to manifest themselves in firefighters: the smelling, mood swings, nausea, loss of equillibrium were disturbed. At the same time, no one could have imagined that people were on the territory at high radiation fields. When the first victims began to be taken to the Pripyat Medical-Sanitary Unit - 126, the doctors thought that maybe the guys were breathing in some carbon monoxide, which caused poisoning of the body. But as it turned out later, the poisoning was fatal, but not by gas evaporation, but by radiation.

The first victims of acute radiation sickness were loaded onto buses and taken to Borispol airport for onward transportation to the specialized clinic No. 6 of Moscow. All victims died between May 11 and July 31. They were buried in coffins, wrapped in lead foil, set up with concrete slabs.
