Prypiat - the fairy city
How everything began…
The emergence of Pripyat was not due to the historical residence of people on this territory. The city was built because of the construction of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and was intended for the residence of service personnel. The construction of the future atom city began with a temporary settlement of builders consisting of barracks and carriages, which was called Lesnoy. On February 4, 1970, the first peg was driven into the construction of the city of Pripyat. The choice of location for the construction of the city was the most suitable, since there was a number of rail and road connections nearby, and also the river was very useful. Pripyat was built in a complex according to a previously approved master plan. At first, the first two microdistricts were built, Lenin Avenue planted with slender poplars became the center of the city. At the end of 1973, almost four thousand people already lived in Pripyat.
The city has a pronounced center, and consists of a complex of buildings: a department store, a restaurant, the Energetik Palace of Culture, the Polesye Hotel and the City Executive Committee building. The city was originally planned for 75–80 thousand people to live in. For this, sites for building up the sixth and seventh microdistricts have already been prepared, so those 49,400 residents who were officially registered at the time of the accident felt quite spacious here. The average age of Pripyat did not exceed 26 years. To the services of residents, the builders built a large cinema, a swimming pool, two stadiums, many kindergartens, schools, gyms, playgrounds, cafes, shops, and on May Day holidays were supposed to launch a "Ferris wheel".
All this allowed Pripyat to be dubbed “the standard of Soviet urban planning,” so to speak, a model city. By the way, it really was. In Pripyat, there were 27 nationalities. And the city was really intended for the needs of it's residents, because, according to the stories of residents, the most scarce goods were put on the shelves only in the evening, when visitors left the city. There were almost no crimes in the city. Conflicts mostly occurred on domestic soil or as an insult in public places or drinking alcohol in public places. Pripyat was a beautifully landscaped and compact town with an area of 3 square kilometers. Fourteen spacious streets were laid on which 160 residential buildings, 15 kindergartens and 5 schools were built. Pripyat could be called the dream of a Soviet person - comfortable accommodation alongside well-paid jobs, excellent supplies, opportunities for recreation or sports, boiling life and great plans for the future.
