Abandoned village of Chornobyl district
The village Buriakivka
Buryakivka is a former village located in the 10-km zone of compulsory resettlement, 50 kilometers north-west from the former district center, the city of Chornobyl and 12 kilometers west from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
In literary sources, the village was first mentioned in the middle of the XIX century.
Administratively, Buryakivka used to be submitted to the village council of Rechitsa village .
Before the Chernobyl accident, 226 people lived in the village, there were 131 courtyards. After the disaster of 1986, residents were resettled to the villages of Makarovsky district of Kiev region.
The village was officially deregistered as a settlement in 1999.
It is known that in the village of Buryakivka lived the last years of his life, died and was buried the second cousin of Taras Shevchenko - Varfolomey Shevchenko.
Buryakivka is famous for one of the symbols of the Exclusion Zone - the liquidators equipment platform - the burial ground of the same name, being located literally 4 kilometers south of the village.
PZRO (Point of Radioactive Waste Disposal ) "Buryakivka" is a trench-drainage basin (repository) of radioactive waste.
PZRO was established in the first months of work to eliminate the consequences of the accident. Decontamination of buildings and premises, clearing the territories of the industrial site of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, all this led to the fact that huge amount of radioactive wastes was generated, which already then had to be located somewhere.
