Kopachi is a radioactive village

Kopachi is a village that does not exist

The village of Kopachi is located just 4 kilometers from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Before evacuation, 1114 inhabitants lived in the village. Evacuated on May 3, 1986. At the time of the accident on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the village fell into the zone of the so-called “western trail” - where the radioactive cloud passed from the nuclear power plant to the west. At the base of this trail is the well-known "Red Forest" - a section of pine forest (about a hundred hectares), which died as a result of irradiation. This forest itself was located outside the village of Kopachi.

The levels of radiation here were so high that the houses had to literally bury them. Such a twist of fate - Kopachi - buried. To do this, they dug a hole near the house, after which engineering machines (WRI, BAT-2) demolished the house and covered it with earth. A decontamination machine (ARS-14), which was intended for dust suppression during the destruction of buildings, was still involved in this work.

Now passing by the former village, you can see the mounds - actually there are buried houses. Such an unusual cemetery. On the graves are not crosses, but signs of radiation danger, under the ground are not human remains, but houses.

From the whole village you can see only a few objects here - it is an abandoned MTS base (machine and tractor station), a village council building, a kindergarten and a monument to the Great Patriotic War.

During our excursions to Pripyat, we sometimes stop at a kindergarten. This garden is unique in that it differs even from the buildings of a kindergarten in Pripyat. The building is a triangular portico and columns of Greek style. Even in the XVI century, such architectural elements were used for the buildings of palaces, temples, estates, etc. And then someone's creative nature added Palladian-style elements so popular all over the world to an ordinary country house. Now, inside the kindergarten, children's lockers for clothes, a bedroom with bunk beds and single beds, a library room have been preserved.
