The village Kupovate

A trip to Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

Kupovate village is located in the southeastern part of the Chernobyl Zone, the distance to the city of Chernobyl (the former district center) is about 30 kilometers.

This territory is mainly a marshland, and it is not surprising, because in three kilometers there is the river Pripyat.

Officially, Kupovate is an uninhabited village, and “self-settlers” live unofficially here - people who returned to their native homes after evacuation in 1986, and still continue to live there.

Sadly, the lives and destinies of these people were divided into stages: before the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant - on April 26, and after it.

Before the accident, the nearest villages of Gorodishche and Otashev entered the village council of Kupovate. There was a collective farm named after the XX Congress of the Communist Party of the USSR. It is known that in the village there was an elementary school, a club, a library, a machine-tractor station. Also, initially, there was a statue of "The Bull Tamer", which today is installed in the city of Chernobyl, near the memorial complex "Star of Wormwood."

Before the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, 324 inhabitants lived in the village. After the evacuation, several dozen people returned to their homes. Now they have the status of "self-settlers". And the fact that they are called "self-settlers" for them is insulting, they say: "how is that possible, we returned back to our home, but got such a nickname". Now about 16 people live in Kupovate.

It is interesting that in Kupovate for fifteen years, after the Chernobyl accident, there was an experimental household. There were farms, agricultural machinery and equipment. The meaning of the experimental farm was to study the methods of growing "clean" (in terms of the radiation environment) crops and products in "dirty" conditions. Scientific activity was discontinued in 2002. The farm was mothballed, and agricultural machinery went to the garages under protection. When the farm worked, it provided at least some employment to “self-settlers”, financial support and diversity in life. Now people are forced to survive retirement and count on at least some support from relatives. Previously, a mobile shop with food was coming to the village, where people could buy bread, cereals and other products. Now they live at the expense of their private gardens. They breed chickens, have their own vegetable gardens, go to the forest for mushrooms and berries, and of course they fish. They are also often visited by foresters who can help, for example, to dig up a vegetable garden, chop firewood, because the years are not the same, the average age of “self-settlers” today is about 70 years. Also come here official tours and, of course, not empty-handed.
