Railway station "Yaniv"
The station "Yanov" is a railway hub, which is located near the no longer existing village Yanov - the first mention of which dates back to the 18th century. Yanov railway station is located on the Chernihiv - Ovruch section (length 177.5 km), this is the South-Western railway, which is located near the town of Pripyat. In 1925, when the railway connection between the cities of Chernigov and Ovruch was built, Yanov found himself in the middle of these two cities. By the time of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, about 450 people lived in the there. The presence of the railway hub as one of the infrastructure elements served in the selection of the construction place of the future “atom city” - Pripyat and the Chernobyl NPP. After all, it was convenient to deliver construction materials to the construction site by railways. Before the Chernobyl disaster at the Yanov station, passenger transport and cargo operations were in force. Also, to the station adjoined the railway branches of the Chernobyl NPP, the tank farm and other enterprises of the city of Pripyat.
In 1986, the village and the Yanov station came under high radiative forcing. Radiation dose levels amounted to hundreds of milliratgen per hour. Also, the village and the station are located near the site of the “Red Forest”, so the Yanov settlement was evacuated on April 27, its residents were taken on two diesel trains, and the houses were soon buried, as they did not respond to decontamination. During the liquidation of the Chernobyl accident, the Yanov station provided the transportation of goods for the construction of the Shelter (Sarcophagus).
After the disaster, some sections of the railway were resumed. The construction of a new city of nuclear scientists - Slavutych served for this. Now every day an electric train runs there, that carries the Chernobyl nuclear power plant personnel on the route Slavutych - Semihody - Slavutych. Also, during the construction of the NSC (New Safe Confinement), some railway lines were resumed and used to support construction works.
