The third turn of the Chernobyl NPP
Beginning of the history of the third stage of the Chernobyl NPP
The unfinished fifth and sixth power units of the Chernobyl NPP are the first to meet our tourists at the entrance to the industrial site of the station, next to the diversion channel, which offers a panoramic view of the Chernobyl station (a popular place for tourist photos). The third phase of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant consists of the structures of the fifth and sixth power units, which are located on an artificial island, between the cooling pond and drainage channel. The complex of the third stage also includes two unfinished cooling towers, which were intended for cooling nuclear reactors. Construction and installation work of the fifth block began in 1981, the construction of the sixth block - in 1983. The launch of the fifth power unit was planned in October 1986. Only the foundation pit was prepared for the sixth reactor; it was planned to commission the ego in 1987. A total of 4 construction stages were planned during the construction of the station. By 1986, the first and second stages were put into operation, each of which consisted of two power units.
Unfortunately, the accident on April 26 at the fourth unit canceled these plans. The construction of the fifth unit of the Chernobyl NPP was stopped at a high stage of its readiness. The block itself was completely sewn up with metal, which later gave the block a rusty, post-apocalyptic look. There was an opinion, after all, to finish the construction and reopen the unit, complete and launch the fifth power unit of the Chernobyl station. On this occasion, in the spring of 1987, public meetings were held in Ukraine in which they discussed the project of resuming the construction of the fifth power unit, and its further operation, instead of taking large-scale measures to deactivate the third Chernobyl NPP unit. The project included the installation of diesel generators, fire extinguishing systems, systems of enhanced ventilation, insulation of the roofs of the unit with fire-resistant coating and more. But in May 1987, the Literary Gazette published official statements by the Chairman of the USSR State Atomic Energy Committee A.M. Petrosyants, that "Construction of the fifth and sixth power units of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant will not continue." Then they took the final conclusion about stopping the construction of the third stage and its complete conservation. To this day, procedures are continuing for dismantling the structures of the block and objects to the adjacent territory.
Excursions and tours to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone
The third stage of the Chernobyl NPP symbolizes simultaneously the irreversibility and suddenness of the catastrophe. Having gone on an excursion with our company now, you will be able to independently see and feel the magnitude of these structures. Make stunning photos, against the background of the red-burgundy sheathing of the power unit, which forever froze in time. We recommend to rent a personal dosimeter - a device for measuring background radiation, which will constantly inform you about the level of the radiation situation in the area where you are. We remind that visiting the territories of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is allowed only to persons who are at least 18 years old. You can also get acquainted with other types of tours that we organize as part of our activities. Only you have a unique opportunity to meet the sunset in Pripyat, explore the city at night, visit remote corners, both Pripyat and the Exclusion Zone in general, visit the Chernobyl nuclear power plant from the inside (available on days and private tours). I draw your attention that the price of the tour depends on its type and terms of booking. Hurry up to touch the story, which slowly collapses under the influence of time and the influence of nature.
