All reports of man-made disasters in the USSR were carefully hidden by the 6th Main Directorate of the KGB, which was responsible for industrial security and economic counterintelligence. The Chernobyl disaster was no exception, and in view of the enormous scale of the accident, data about it was hidden not only from the Soviet people, but also from the international community.
The KGB constantly dispatched to the heads of various departments and enterprises engaged in the aftermath of the accident, the lists of information which were prohibited to be disclosed. These lists were brought, under the list, to all employees by special departments at the place of work. The most comprehensive list of forbidden topics for discussion was formed by July, when work on the aftermath of the accident reached its peak.
